Haircut Consultations in Chapin and Columbia SC

A haircut goes wrong from a misunderstanding far more often than from a mistake with the scissors. Someone says short, someone else hears something different, and nobody finds out until the hair is on the floor. Fifteen minutes at the start is what prevents that.

What a consultation is for

  • Translating what you want into what your hair can do.
  • Finding out how you actually live, not how you would style it ideally.
  • Telling you honestly if a photograph is more than one appointment away.
  • It is complimentary, and it takes about fifteen minutes.

Why the same words mean different things

Words like short, layered, textured and low maintenance describe a feeling, not a measurement. Short can mean a bob or a crop. Layered can mean invisible internal work or visible steps. A consultation turns those words into something specific we both agree on, using your hair in front of us instead of describing it.

This is why photographs are useful and insufficient at the same time. The hair in the photograph has its own density, its own pattern, its own length, and a stylist who made a hundred small decisions you cannot see. Holding it up next to your hair in daylight is what turns it into a plan.

The most useful photograph a guest brings is often the one they do not like. Once we know you dislike width at the jaw, or weight at the ends, or a part you cannot keep up, we can rule a lot out quickly.

The questions that seem irrelevant and are not

  1. How do you dry it? Air dried, rough dried, blow dried properly, or scraped back wet. Each one calls for a different shape, and a cut designed for a routine you do not have will fail by Wednesday.
  2. How much time do you actually spend? Not how much you would like to spend. Ten minutes and thirty minutes are different briefs and both are legitimate.
  3. How often can you come back? A shape that looks right for two weeks is a bad shape if you visit every twelve. Grow out is part of the design.
  4. What did the last stylist do that you disliked? The fastest route to a good outcome is knowing what to avoid.
  5. What is your hair doing lately? Postpartum changes, medication, a new medication, heat damage, a summer of lake water. All of it changes what the hair can hold.
Almost nobody walks in wanting a specific haircut. They walk in wanting to feel a certain way and stop fighting their hair every morning. Our job is to work out which shape delivers that. The Hyde team

What we are looking at while you talk

Density, which is how many hairs you have. Texture, which is how thick each one is. Those two are independent and people mix them up constantly: fine hair can be dense, and coarse hair can be sparse, and they need opposite approaches.

Then growth patterns, because a cowlick at the crown or a strong front hairline dictates where a part can sit and where weight has to go. Then condition, especially where hair breaks along the mid lengths, which tells us whether length is realistic. And how your hair sits when you leave it alone, which is how it will look most days.

Coming in for Consultation covers Roughly
A first haircut with us Shape, routine, growth patterns, maintenance interval 15 minutes
A significant change All of the above, plus what it will take to maintain and to reverse 15 to 20 minutes
Color or a correction Condition, colour history, porosity, how many visits it needs 20 minutes
Extensions Method, density match, colour match, lifestyle and upkeep 20 to 30 minutes
Curly hair Pattern, shrinkage, weight distribution, how you wear it 15 to 20 minutes

Why a consultation is not an upsell

Guests sometimes brace for a consultation because they expect it to end in a longer list of services. It does not. It is complimentary, it is fifteen minutes, and quite often the outcome is that we talk you out of something. A guest who comes in for a full head of highlights and leaves with a plan for a partial and a gloss has spent less money and will be happier in six weeks.

The same goes for length. Plenty of guests arrive ready to cut off six inches because their hair feels heavy and lifeless, and the actual problem is bulk sitting in the wrong place. Removing weight instead of length solves it and keeps the hair they spent two years growing.

We would rather tell you that in the first fifteen minutes than take the booking and let you work it out afterwards.

Finding the right stylist, not just the right salon

Different stylists have different strengths, and it helps to be straightforward about that. Some of our team are strongest on blonde work, some on curl, some on precision cutting, some on extensions. Matching you to the right person matters as much as the consultation itself.

That is what the Stylist Match survey is for, and it is why we would rather ask a few questions up front than have you book with whoever happened to be available. You can meet the teams for Chapin and the Vista before you decide.

If you have had a bad experience somewhere else

A lot of first appointments here start with someone apologising for being nervous. You do not need to. If a previous cut went badly, telling us what happened is genuinely useful information, and it is the fastest way to make sure it does not happen again.

Bring the details if you have them. What you asked for, what you got, and which part of it bothered you most. Sometimes the problem was the shape, sometimes it was the styling advice, and occasionally the cut was fine and the product routine was working against it. Those are three different fixes.

One practical note: if you are considering a big change, book the consultation as its own visit rather than tacking it onto the appointment. Fifteen minutes with no clock running and no cape on lets you go home and think about it. Plenty of guests do exactly that and come back two weeks later ready, which is a much better way to make a decision you will live with for six months.

What happens after we agree

We say the plan back to you in plain language before we start. Length, weight, where the shortest point sits, what it will look like in six weeks, and what you will need to do at home. If any of that does not match what you were picturing, that is the moment to say so, and nothing has happened yet.

Then it gets written down for next time. A cut that worked is worth repeating exactly, and you should not have to explain yourself again next time.

Worth knowing before you come

  • Come with your hair as you normally wear it, not styled specially for us.
  • Day two hair tells us more than freshly washed hair does.
  • Bring the photograph you dislike as well as the ones you like.
  • Consultations are complimentary at Hyde Chapin and Hyde Vista.

Common questions

Do I need a consultation before a haircut?

For a cut you have had before with a stylist who knows you, no. For a first appointment, a significant change, or anything involving curl or color, yes, and it is complimentary. Fifteen minutes at the start prevents the outcome nobody wants, which is a result that was technically what you asked for and not what you meant.

What should I bring to a hair consultation?

Come with your hair as you actually wear it, unstyled if possible. Bring two or three photographs, and if you can, bring one you dislike. Knowing what you are reacting against narrows the brief faster than three examples of what you like.

How long does a consultation take?

About fifteen minutes for a cut, a little longer for color or extensions where we need to look at condition and history. It is complimentary either way, and it can happen before your appointment or as a separate visit if you would rather think about it.

What if I do not know what I want?

That is a completely normal place to start and it is easier to work with than a fixed idea that does not suit your hair. Most guests know how they want to feel and how much time they are willing to spend. Those two answers are enough for us to build from.

Will you tell me if what I want is not possible?

Yes, plainly, and in the consultation rather than afterwards. Sometimes the honest answer is that a photograph is two or three appointments away rather than one. Knowing that up front turns a disappointment into a plan.

Fifteen complimentary minutes now saves a haircut nobody wanted. Reserve a consultation at either location.
