Last month, a guest came in after getting her balayage and keratin treatment same-day at another salon. Her gorgeous blonde had faded to a muddy brass within a week, and the keratin treatment didn't even take properly in some sections. We had to wait 6 weeks before we could safely correct the color. This isn't an arbitrary rule. This two-week period gives your hair time to settle. It allows the pH to rebalance after coloring and ensures the new color molecules have fully stabilized within the hair shaft before we seal them in with the treatment.

Which Comes First: Color or Keratin?

This is the big question. For most of our guests, especially my balayage and lived-in blonde guests, I almost always recommend this order:

Get Your Color Service First. We'll do your highlights, your root touch-up, your balayage, whatever your goal is. This gets the "lifting" part of the process out of the way. A full balayage typically ranges from $250 to $400 depending on length and density.

Wait Two Weeks. This is your crucial waiting period. Use great professional products at home to keep your hair healthy.

Get Your Smoothing Treatment. Now, we apply the keratin or Brazilian Blowout ($300 to $450 depending on length). This will seal the cuticle, lock in your new color, and give you incredible shine and frizz control that holds up even in the South Carolina humidity. In fact, many guests find the treatment actually enhances the vibrancy of their color.

What About Highlights and Bleach? A Stylist's Honest Warning

A very slight shift in tone can happen, which a skilled stylist can account for during your color formulation. This is why we always discuss your smoothing treatment plans during your color consultation.

Can I just get a root touch-up after my keratin treatment?

Yes, but you still need to wait at least two weeks. Applying color only to the new growth is much safer than applying it all over treated hair. Root touch-ups are lower risk because we're not coating the lengths that have been sealed by the keratin treatment.

What about at-home smoothing treatments?

I strongly advise against them, especially if you have color-treated hair. The formulas are unpredictable, and the risk of applying it incorrectly and causing damage or ruining your color is incredibly high. I've had to fix too many DIY disasters where guests tried to save money and ended up spending more to correct the damage.

How do We know if my hair is healthy enough for both services?

That's what a consultation is for. A great stylist will assess your hair's porosity, elasticity, and history to give you an honest recommendation. If your hair is too compromised, we'll create a plan with reparative treatments (like Olaplex or Fusio-Dose) to get it strong and healthy first before attempting either color or smoothing services.
