Balayage for Brunettes and Redheads: What Actually Works
Share
All the time, we see guests wanting a balayage but they feel restricted because they are under the impression that their hair is too dark to achieve that look. People think it's only for creating beachy blonde hair, like it's exclusively a blonde thing.. This is one of the biggest myths that we hear about balayage!
We have a lot of experience with doing balayage on brunettes and redheads, and it's some of our favorite work! The dimension that you can create on darker hair is incredible! You're not trying to go from dark to platinum. You're enhancing what's already there, adding depth and movement that makes the hair look richer and more alive!
Let's walk you through what actually works for dark hair and what we've learned from experiencing it firsthand!
How It's Different From Blonde Balayage
When someone with blonde or light brown hair gets balayage, we're usually lifting their hair several levels to create those bright, sun-kissed pieces. The contrast is dramatic.
With brunettes and redheads, the approach is completely different. We're lifting maybe one or two levels, sometimes less. Just enough to add warmer tones that catch the light and create dimension.
For brunettes, we're adding caramel, honey, chocolate, warm chestnuts. For redheads, we're enhancing with copper, auburn, bronze. The goal isn't to look like you colored your hair. The goal is to look like your hair has incredible natural depth that people can't quite put their finger on!
Questions Everyone Asks
"Will I have a harsh grow-out?"
The great thing about balayage is that there are no harsh lines! The color melts from your natural base into the lighter pieces so smoothly that you can't tell where one stops and the other starts. The grow-out is way more forgiving than traditional highlights. Because there's no stark line of demarcation at the root, your hair just gradually gets richer as it grows. You don't have that obvious root line that screams "I need a touch-up!"
"How is this different from regular highlights?"
Traditional highlights with foils create a more uniform pattern. Every highlight is basically the same thickness and placed in a regular pattern. It's precise and controlled.
Balayage is more freehand. We're painting color exactly where we want it to catch light and create movement. The result is softer, more natural-looking, and more customized to how your hair actually moves!
Highlights are great, but they don't have that lived-in, effortless quality that balayage does.
Adding Red and Copper Tones
If you want something warmer or more dramatic, red and copper balayage on brunette hair is stunning! The concern everyone has is that red fades fast. And yes, red pigment does fade faster than other colors because the molecules are bigger. But modern color technology is way better than it used to be, and if you take care of it properly, you can keep reds looking rich for weeks!
We use professional color that has great staying power and we typically finish with a gloss that seals the cuticle and locks in the vibrancy! Really, the key is what you do at home. Use color-safe shampoo. Rinse with cool water. Try not to wash your hair every single day.
As for which red to choose, it depends on what look you want.
Copper is bright, warm, and really eye-catching. If you want people to notice your hair, this is it!
Auburn is a mix of red and brown. It's rich and sophisticated without being too dramatic.
Mahogany is a cooler red with some violet in it. It looks amazing on dark espresso brown bases!
Bronze is a warm, golden-red. It looks really natural, like your hair got sun-kissed.
Why This Works in SC Weather
Living in South Carolina, we deal with serious humidity in the summer. That thick air can be really rough on hair. Color can fade faster, everything gets frizzy.. It's a whole thing.
Brunette and red balayage actually hold up really well in this climate. The rich, dimensional tones work with your hair's natural texture instead of against it. If you have waves or curls, the color enhances them and makes them look intentional instead of messy. The warmth in bronzed balayage or copper tones looks perfect in our sunny weather. It gives the hair this healthy glow that looks natural, not like you're fighting the elements.
Keeping It Looking Good
The best thing about this kind of color is that you're not in the salon every six weeks for touch-ups. Most people come back every twelve to sixteen weeks to refresh. That's much more manageable than traditional highlights! To keep it looking good between appointments, you just need to be smart about products.
Use color-safe shampoo. Other shampoos strip color and dry your hair out. We sell Oribe and Kérastase here because they're gentle and they actually work!
Rinse with cool water after you condition. It seals the cuticle and locks in color! Hot water opens the cuticle and allows for color to wash out.
Treat your hair once a week. Deep conditioning keeps your hair healthy and your color vibrant! We offer Kérastase Fusio-Dose treatments in the salon, but you can also use a hair masque at home.
Last but most certainly not least, protect your hair from the sun! UV exposure fades color just like it tans your skin. If you're outside a lot, use a leave-in with UV protection.
