Keeping Your Hand-Tied Extensions Flawless: Hyde Salon's Honest Guide

Keeping Your Hand-Tied Extensions Flawless: Hyde Salon's Honest Guide

Here at Hyde, we have multiple stylists that specialize in hand-tied extensions! We can tell you, there is nothing like the moment a guest sees their finished transformation for the first time. Their hand goes straight to their hair, they lift the ends, they flip it over their shoulder, and for a few seconds you can see pure joy on their face.

But right after that moment, we always get the question:

“How do We keep them looking like this?”

Hand-tied extensions are beautiful, but they are also an investment. A first install can range vastly in price, depending on the amount of hair needed, the color of the hair, and what hair extension method is being used. With proper care, your extensions can last 6-12 months. Without proper care, they can tangle, slip, or even require an emergency detangling appointment.

A Real Guest Story: The 8-Month Extension Transformation

When Selene first came to us, she said she wanted longer, fuller hair, but admitted she was “terrified of ruining it.” She had gone through a bad experience at another salon and spent a lot of money on extensions that matted within the first month. She never even got to enjoy them.

So, we did a consultation and planned for a fresh install with two rows of hand-tied hair. The finished result looked smooth. She ran her fingers through her new hair over and over again, and kept saying that she felt like herself again! Before she left, we of course gave her the exact aftercare system to follow in order to succeed with her new and improved extensions.

Here is what her real journey looked like:

Week 1: Learning the Feel of the Hair

Selene messaged us saying how crazy it was that she could not stop touching her hair because it felt so silky and weightless! She was not used to that, based off of her last experience. When brushed, the hair glided from roots to ends without catching. This is how extensions should feel in the beginning: smooth, light, and soft at the base!

Week 2: The First Friction Moment

Feeling a little stress creeping in from her previous experience, Selene asked to stop in because she had a small tangle at the nape. It felt slightly gritty, like it was beginning to knot. She had fallen asleep with damp hair after a late shower. It was not a full disaster, but it was a great opportunity to help show her in depth a few of the key aftercare steps.

We walked her through how to dry the base completely before bed and how to brush more intentionally. Luckily it was a quick fix, and it saved her from having to relive the nightmare that she had to go through before. This goes to show how important it is to follow those aftercare steps to a T!

Week 6: Her First Move-Up

At each move-up appointment, we remove the rows and reinstall the hair extensions fresh. A full reinstall protects your natural hair, prevents stress on fragile sections, and keeps your extensions feeling comfortable and secure.

Selene's wefts were clean. No matting. No buildup. She smiled when we told her that she was doing everything right!

Month 4: Color Refresh

Extensions, like natural hair, need to be toned and given some shine maintenance. We added a trim to Selene's appointment as well to keep the ends crisp.

Month 8: The Proof

Selene's extensions still felt soft and moved naturally. The base was clean, the rows were intact, and the hair had the same reflective shine as month one. This is what perfect extension maintenance can look like!

What Properly Cared-For Extensions Feel Like

There is a huge difference between extensions that are maintained well and extensions that are neglected.

  • Well-maintained extensions feel smooth from the root. When you press your fingers to the base, the weft feels flat, not bunched.
  • Healthy extensions sway together when you move your head.

vs.

  • Neglected extensions feel thick at the root, almost like something is stuck there. When brushed, the hair catches and makes a faint scratching sound.
  • Damaged extensions separate into dry strands.

The Daily Routine That Protects Your Investment

These are the 3 main areas where guests either succeed or struggle.

  • Brushing: Hold the base and brush from ends to roots 2-4 times a day.
  • Washing: Brush before showering, shampoo the scalp gently, and never scrub the wefts.
  • Drying: Always dry the roots completely before bed.

What Extension Care Actually Costs

Honesty creates trust, which is why we require a consultation before booking any extension appointments at Hyde.

Our consultations are complimentary, and this is where you will get an accurate quote on your initial install (hair + service), maintenance move-ups, color refreshes, and trims. We are very thorough during our consultations, and we will be sure that you leave with confidence in what you will be paying throughout this journey.

Quality hair is an investment, and proper maintenance dramatically lowers long-term costs.

When Things Go Wrong: The Most Common Extension Mistake

The number one issue we see is guests going to sleep with damp extensions. Moisture trapped at the weft line creates matting faster than anything else. It looks like the hair twists together at the root and forms a dense, fuzzy cluster. This can ruin your extensions.

When starting your hair extension journey, it is important that you realize the upkeep needed at home, and agree to (for yourself) following the proper aftercare.

Ready for Extensions You Can Actually Maintain?

If you have ever damaged expensive extensions, or if you have been nervous to try them because you were afraid of ruining your natural hair, you are not alone. Selene felt that way too until she learned the right system. We can help! Let’s create the extension transformation you have been dreaming of and teach you exactly how to keep it flawless for months.

We can't wait to see you!
