Classic Balayage
Classic balayage is the foundation of everything we do. This is traditional hand-painted color, applied freehand without foils, left to process in open air. The result is the softest possible transition from your natural root to brightened mid-lengths and ends, and it's the right call for anyone who wants low-maintenance color that grows out without a hard line. Expect a one to three level lift depending on your starting point.
Foilyage
Foilyage is balayage painted, then wrapped in foil. The foil traps heat and lets the lightener process further than open-air balayage, which gives a brighter end result. Foilyage is the technique we reach for with darker or more resistant hair, or for anyone who wants a more dramatic face-frame or brighter money piece.
Face-Framing Balayage
Face-framing balayage focuses lightness around your face: the pieces that fall forward from your part, along your temples, and through the front sections. It's quicker, less of an investment, and delivers the biggest visual impact per dollar spent. It's also a popular touch-up between full balayage appointments.
Teasyage
Teasyage is a newer hybrid technique. We back-comb a section, paint lightener onto the teased piece, and the tease creates a soft, diffused root that blurs as it grows out. Teasyage is ideal for anyone who wants to stretch appointments to 10 or 12 weeks without seeing a regrowth line.
Root Melt and Shadow Root
A root melt or shadow root is a finishing service we often pair with balayage. We glaze your natural root color down into your lightened mid-lengths, creating a seamless transition that makes the balayage look softer and grown-in from day one. A shadow root can extend the life of your balayage by three to four weeks.
Balayage Color Correction
Not every balayage result comes from us. Clients walk in with balayage that has gone wrong somewhere else: bands of orange, hot roots, brassy ends, chunky placement, or a patchy grow-out. Color correction is never one-size-fits-all. We consult first, look at the hair under salon lighting, pull a strand test where needed, and build a plan. Sometimes the correction happens in a single appointment; sometimes it takes two or three sessions to get there without compromising hair integrity.
The Balayage Process at Hyde Salon
Every balayage appointment starts the same way. You sit down with your stylist for a consultation before any color touches your hair. We look at your current color, assess your hair condition, talk through your maintenance tolerance, and look at inspiration photos together. This step is where we catch potential issues: a history of box color, a previous balayage that didn't lift well, or heat damage that would compromise the result. The consultation usually runs 10 to 20 minutes depending on complexity.
Once we have a plan, we move into the painting. A full head of classic balayage can take 60 to 90 minutes to paint alone. Foilyage runs longer because every painted section gets wrapped. Face-framing balayage is typically 30 to 45 minutes of paint time. Our stylists paint slowly and intentionally; rushing this step is where most balayage goes wrong.
Processing time depends on your starting level, the lightener we're using, and the lift we need. Classic balayage typically processes 30 to 45 minutes in open air; foilyage processes 20 to 40 minutes in foil. We check regularly rather than setting a timer and walking away, because over-processing is one of the fastest ways to compromise hair.
After processing, we shampoo, tone, and style. Toning is where the balayage gets its final color: we mix custom toners to neutralize any unwanted warmth and deposit the exact shade of blonde, bronde, brunette, or copper you're going for. A blow-out and style finish the appointment.
Balayage Investment and Appointment Length
Hyde Salon prices balayage based on consultation. Every head of hair is different. The length of your hair, the density, the current color, the lift we need to achieve, and the toner we're using all affect the service. Pricing at consultation protects you from getting overcharged for a service you don't need, and it protects the stylist from under-charging for the work it actually takes. A face-framing balayage might run 90 minutes to two hours. A full classic balayage typically runs three to four hours. A foilyage with root melt on long hair can stretch to four or five hours. A balayage color correction often takes five to six hours and sometimes requires a second appointment. What's included in every balayage: consultation, custom color formulation, hand-painted application, processing, toning, a bond-building treatment when needed, shampoo and conditioner with professional color-safe product, and a blow-out with style.
Balayage Maintenance
Most balayage at Hyde lasts eight to twelve weeks before it needs a refresh. That's one of the big reasons clients choose balayage over traditional highlights: instead of coming in every four to six weeks for a touch-up, you can stretch your color appointments without seeing a hard regrowth line.
We usually recommend a toning appointment somewhere between full balayage sessions. Toners last four to six weeks on average, and a gloss or tone between services pulls out any warmth that's crept in. Clients who spend time outside, in pools, or on the water often need a tone around week six; clients who stay out of the sun can usually stretch longer.
At-home care is the other half of the equation. Color-safe shampoo and conditioner are non-negotiable. We carry Oribe and Kerastase because these lines are built to protect and extend color. Purple shampoo used sparingly keeps blonde tones cool, and a weekly bond-building treatment keeps ends strong. Is Balayage Right for You?
The strongest candidates are clients with healthy hair who want dimensional, lived-in color and don't want to come in every four weeks for a root touch-up. Virgin hair lifts beautifully with balayage. Hair that's been previously highlighted, as long as it's in good condition, can usually be blended into a balayage with excellent results.
Balayage works on dark hair, medium brown, light brown, red, and blonde. What it can't always do in a single appointment is take very dark hair to platinum blonde; that's a multi-session process, and anyone promising otherwise isn't being truthful about hair science.
Balayage also has real limits on hair that's been heavily compromised. Box color, heavy heat damage, or hair bleached to the point of fragility may need a round of bond-building treatments and haircuts before we can lighten again. We'll always be honest at the consultation. Can balayage work on dark hair?
Yes. For naturally dark brown or black hair, we often recommend foilyage because the foil gives us the extra lift needed to brighten dark hair without over-processing. Going from very dark to very light is a multi-session journey, but a gorgeous, dimensional balayage on dark hair is possible in one appointment.
Will balayage damage my hair?
Balayage involves lightener, which by definition changes the structure of your hair. Balayage at Hyde is paired with bond-building treatments, careful processing, and aftercare recommendations that keep hair in the best possible condition. Do I need a consultation first?
