Here at Hyde Salon, your hair extension journey starts with a consultation where we assess your hair's health and density, and match custom color blends to your natural hair. With 10 extension specialists at each Hyde location, we've got you covered on this big transformation! One of the most common questions we get is, "So, what's the big deal with hand-tied extensions?" It's usually asked in a slightly hushed tone, full of curiosity and a little bit of nervousness. You've seen the gorgeous photos, the smooth volume, and the incredible length.. But you want to know what the process actually feels like from start to finish!
We absolutely love walking our guests through this experience. Getting extensions isn't just a service; it's a journey that we take together. It's about building a look that feels completely and confidently YOU! So let's talk about what really happens from the moment you book an Extension Consultation, to the second you walk out with the hair that you've always wanted!
Why Hand-Tied? The Secret to Invisible, Healthy Volume
Before we get into the "how", let's talk about the "why". The world of extensions can be confusing, but hand-tied wefts have become incredibly popular for a few key reasons.
Unlike methods that use glue or heat, hand-tied extensions are attached to your natural hair by sewing wefts to a foundation of small, silicone-lined beads. Though we offer multiple methods of hair extensions here at Hyde, this specific technique has some incredible benefits:
- Minimal Contact, Maximum Health: Since the hair is sewn in, removal is gentle and the stress on your natural hair is incredibly low. Your hair's integrity should be untouched!
- Unmatched Comfort: The wefts are so thin and lightweight that they lay completely flat against your scalp. Our guests tell us that they forget they're wearing extensions after the first couple of days. The hair has tons of natural movement, allowing it to feel just like your own hair.
- smooth Blending: This installation method allows for the most natural and invisible blend. No need to worry about seeing where the extensions begin!
Here in SC, with our infamous humidity, the lightweight nature of hand-tied extensions is a huge plus. They don't feel heavy or get weighed down once that summer heat rolls in.
Phase 1- The Consultation: Where Your Vision Takes Shape
This first appointment is the most important step in the entire process. It's a dedicated, one-on-one conversation where we map out your dream hair. This isn't a quick chat; it's a deep get into your goals, lifestyle, and hair history.
What to Expect During Your Extension Consultation
Our service specialists will start by simply listening to you. What brought you here? Are you looking for incredible length, natural-looking volume, and/or a way to add pops of color without the commitment?
Here's what we'll cover:
Hair and Scalp Assessment: We'll take a close look at your hair's density, texture, and overall health. This helps us determine if you're a good candidate and how much hair your natural strands can comfortably support.
Goal Setting: We'll talk about your desired final look. It's helpful to bring inspiration photos so we can get on the same page visually.
Lifestyle & Maintenance: Are you in the gym every day? Do you swim a lot? Do you prefer to air-dry or style your hair daily? Your routine helps us customize a plan that works for you, not against you.
Investment & Upkeep: We believe in complete transparency. Hand-tied extension pricing depends on what color you're getting, how many rows you need, and your desired length, which is why we give you a detailed quote at the end of the consult to prepare you for this investment in yourself.
We truly are in this journey together. We want you to feel empowered and excited, and have all of your questions answered before moving forward.
Phase 2- The Art of the Perfect Color Match
This is where precision becomes essential. Just holding a swatch up to your roots won't cut it. At Hyde, we treat color matching as an art form, creating a custom blend that melts perfectly into your natural hair.
We don't just match one color; we create a dimensional palette. Most people have multiple tones in their hair, especially if they have highlights or lived-in balayage, and we cater to them all!
Our process involves:
Matching the Color: We match the extensions to the color of your mid-lengths and ends, since this is where the new hair will live. This ensures a flawless transition.
Creating Custom Blends: We often use multiple different shades of wefts to mimic the natural highs and lows in your hair when deemed fit. This is what gives that smooth result and makes the extensions truly undetectable.
Considering Your Future Color: If you're one of our guests who loves being a perfectly bright blonde, we'll factor that in. We can select shades that will complement your current color and continue to look amazing after your next color service.
We once had a guest who was worried the extensions would look fake because her hair has a very specific blend of cool and warm tones. We spent extra time creating a custom mix of three different shades for her, and at the installation, she couldn't tell where her hair ended and the extensions began! That's the goal. Every. Single. Time.!
Phase 3- Installation Day: Your Transformation Unfolds
On the day of your application, we want you to settle in and relax. Our salons, located right in the heart of Downtown Columbia in The Vista and Chapin, SC, are designed to be a calming escape. Grab a coffee, catch up on emails, or just enjoy the moment.
The process itself is meticulous and precise. We start by creating that beaded foundation we mentioned earlier. It's a very neat and organized track that will support the wefts. Then, we carefully stitch the wefts of hair onto that foundation. It's a comfortable process that you can barely feel.
The installation from start to finish can be quite time-consuming, with the potential of taking a few hours depending on how many rows we're installing.
Once all the hair is in place, the final step is the custom cut and blend. We take our time to cut and layer both the natural and new hair to integrate it perfectly, creating soft movement and eliminating any harsh lines. We finish with a beautiful style, showing you how to recreate this brand new look at home!
Living Beautifully with Your New Hair
Once you leave the salon, your journey is just beginning. Taking care of your extensions is key to their longevity, and we'll make sure that you have everything you need!
A few essential tips:
Brushing is Key: Gently brush your hair from the ends up to the roots multiple times a day to prevent tangling.
Extension-Safe Products: We exclusively use and recommend luxury products from Oribe and Kérastase. Their gentle, nourishing formulas protect both the extension hair and your natural hair.
Sleep Smart: A loose braid or low ponytail and a silk pillowcase are your best friends for preventing friction while you sleep.
Pre-Book Your Move-Ups: Sticking to your 6 to 8 week maintenance schedule is crucial for keeping your hair healthy and your extensions looking their best. We all stay busy, so be sure to plan ahead!
Your Hand-Tied Extension Questions Answered
Here is what you need to know.
How long do hand-tied extensions last?
Hand-tied extensions can last 9 to 12 months with proper care and regular move-ups. You should be coming in for these move-ups every 6 to 8 weeks as your natural hair grows so that we can reposition the wefts closer to your scalp each time. After 9 to 12 months, we typically recommend replacing the actual extension hair with a fresh set.
Can I get hand-tied extensions if I have fine hair?
Yes. Because the weight is distributed so evenly across the wefts, this is often one of the safest and most comfortable methods for those with finer hair. We'll assess your hair density during the consultation to determine how many rows your hair can comfortably support without stress.
How much do hand-tied extensions cost?
A lot goes into the hair extension journey. This is why we require the Extension Consultation first and foremost. The pricing heavily depends on several different factors, so our specialists have to get all of the details from you first before providing you with a quote.
Can I still swim and work out with extensions?
Yes. We recommend putting your hair in a low braid and using a leave-in conditioner before swimming to protect it from chlorine or salt. After a workout, be sure to dry any sweat from the attachment points to keep them clean. The extensions themselves are very secure and shouldn't fall out during any physical activity.
What's the difference between hand-tied and tape-in extensions?
Hand-tied wefts are sewn onto beaded rows and last longer between maintenance appointments (6 to 8 weeks versus 4 to 6 weeks for tape-ins). Hand-tied extensions move more naturally and are generally more comfortable for long-term wear. Tape-ins are applied using adhesive wefts that are sandwiched together around sections of the natural hair. They could be considered more quick and convenient for timing purposes, but do require more frequent move-ups.
